A 12-inch roof raise elevates this luxurious custom Skoolie, literally

Equipped at building custom tiny homes from scratch, this Skoolie remodel provided a unique challenge for builders Wind River Tiny Homes. Tasked with turning a 40-foot 2001 Blue Bird school bus into an upscale house on wheels, Wind River raised the roof by 12 inches to heighten the ceilings and create luxurious interiors.
First, the 12-inch roof raise was executed with tempered glass window conversion, angle iron trim, riveted panels, and tapered front and rear panel coverings. Overall, more than 1,6000 new rivets exist in the hull to ensure the Skoolie is completely waterproof. Wind River completed a Rustoleum professional grade roll-on paint job, fastened a custom steel ladder to the roof and installed custom house windows and trim.

The interiors are equally luxurious, finished with white shiplap walls and ceilings paired with tongue-and-groove trim. Dark hardwood floors are pre-finished in a rich mahogany hue. Near the entry, a seating space features an L-shaped storage couch, finished with tribal throw pillows and a textural faux sheepskin. During the roof raise, bus windows were converted to house windows, so large walls of glass can flood the space with light and views.
In the kitchen, butcher block countertops pop against classic white subway tile. A stainless steel apron-front farmhouse sink is paired with a genuine brass faucet and shelf brackets. The propane refrigerator and four-burner stove/oven makes cooking a chinch. Sleek brass hardware complements dark espresso cabinets.
Next to the range, a fishbowl pendant light anchors the high breakfast bar. Two iron and wood stools accompany the hand-hewn wood table, which is just right for sharing a meal for two.
Off of the kitchen, a built-in bunk bed offers spare sleeping space with built-in storage. A gooseneck reading light transforms the bed into a cozy reading nook at any hour. Outside, the roof-mounted Dometic A/C and heat pump offer climate control.
The master bedroom houses a custom queen-size storage bed and built-in end table. Recessed LED lighting and a gooseneck reading light illuminate the space when the sun goes down. Throughout, off-grid 12v light switches gain power from a 200-amp rechargeable deep-cycle battery.
At the foot of the bed, a custom built-in closet hangs shirts, shoes and laundry. Across the way, a contemporary brass light anchors the fold-down standing desk.
A subway tile surround and a rain shower head create a luxurious experience in the walk-in shower. Water is sourced through onboard water storage tanks.

A low-profile bathroom and in-line trap save on space without skimping on style in the bathroom. The Separett composting toiled allows for completely off-the-grid living. Including the purhcase price of the bus, this high-end Skoolie cost $87,000.
