Panoramic windows offer exquisite stargazing in this Canadian micro-chalet

Repère Boréal is a unique eco-tourism resort situated in the heart of Quebec's Charlevoix region. Its charming cottages and tiny structures offer a chance to connect with nature while still enjoying modern comforts.
Most at one with its surroundings, perhaps, is Maikan, a micro home flooded with light and views from every angle. Maikan means "wolf" in Innu, the indigenous language of the Charlevoix region. This proud structure lives up to its name, sitting at one with nature at the top of the food chain.

Inside, walls and ceilings showcase natural wood paneling. Underneath, flooring features a gray/ash finish that complements black window trim. Recessed lighting illuminates the space after dark — when there is no streetlight in sight.
The small yet efficient kitchen stocks all of the necessities. A toaster oven and countertop burner under a stainless steel range hood handle the cooking, and a decent-sized fridge stashes ingredients. Cooking utensils and cutlery hang from hooks on wall-mounted rods, so no drawers are necessary.
The dreamy sleeping area houses a queen bed below a panoramic window. Extending from the side wall to the ceiling, it lets in light and views during the day. At night, visitors can stargaze right from their bed.
Across from the bed, a table for three features a roomy banquette on either side. Pale wood complements natural paneling on all sides of the home. An exposed-bulb industrial sconce hangs above, but candlelight is much preferable after sunset.
The starry sight from the home's large skylight is by far its best feature. Although the space doesn't have its own facilities, visitors can access running water, showers and toilets in the central building just a 60-second walk away. (Maikan does have its own drinking water tank.) Guests can also take advantage of the on-site spa, equipped with hot baths and a sauna for year-round enjoyment.

On the deck, a freestanding outdoor fireplace illuminates the night — enjoyed outdoors or from the glass-encased sleeping space. A cafe table for two is the perfect place to enjoy lunch among the trees. Of course, the best recreation is found on nearby walking trails and beaches along the St. Lawrence River.
