Kitchen islands are a great thing to have in houses of all shapes and sizes, but they're especially useful in tiny homes! They're stylish and functional, and their multi-functional nature makes them an excellent use of floor space.

1. Contemporary home with detached garage from Houseplans.
This design from Houseplans measures 985 square feet (92 square meters), and it boasts plenty of outdoor living space including a porch, a trellis, a terrace, and a sun deck. Inside, the front door opens into an open concept kitchen and living area with a fireplace. Other rooms on the main floor include a laundry area, a bathroom with a shower, and a master bedroom with a walk-in closet. Another bedroom with an attached bathroom is found on the second-floor mezzanine, while the basement is home to a spacious games room, a third bathroom, and yet another bedroom.
2. Two bedroom Tudor design from Family Home Plans.
Measuring 757 square feet (70 square meters), this design from Family Home Plans has a layout that would be great for a family. The front door is found under a small covered entry that opens into the spacious great room. The dining area is off to the left, while the L-shaped kitchen is directly behind the great room. The bathroom is opposite the kitchen, and this is where the laundry machines are found. At the very back of the home, two bedrooms complete the design.
3. Traditional two bedroom home with dining nook from Houseplans.
With vaulted ceilings in almost every room, this design from Houseplans feels much larger than its 925 square feet (86 square meters). The spacious open concept great room and kitchen feature a fireplace, and the dining area is set in a bay window that makes the perfect location for enjoying breakfast in the sun. A laundry/storage area is found at the back of the home, right next to a spacious bathroom with both a tub and a shower. Two bedrooms with vaulted ceilings are on the far left.
4. Lovely cottage with spacious master suite from Architectural Designs.
Although it measures only 550 square feet (51 square meters), this home from Architectural Designs has room for a small dining table in addition to the kitchen island with an eating bar. A small laundry room is separated from the kitchen by a sliding barn door, and this space also provides access to the patio outside. On the right of the home, the living room and bedroom both boast vaulted ceilings. The bedroom is surprisingly spacious for such a small home, and it includes a walk-in closet as well as a bathroom with a tub.
5. Open New American home from ePlans.
This design from ePlans measures exactly 700 square feet (65 square meters), and it's only 16' wide. Perfectly suited for warmer climates, the design features a large deck accessible through both the bedroom and the main living area. However, there's still a fireplace in the living room for chilly winter evenings! The bedroom is separated from the kitchen by a linen closet and a bathroom with a tub.

This ranch home from Architectural Designs isn't exactly sprawling, but at 864 square feet (80 square meters) it still has plenty of space for a family. The front door opens right into the open concept living room and eat-in kitchen, and a large closet to the right of the door keeps clutter contained. A small hallway leads from the kitchen to the private living space, which includes two bedrooms and a bathroom with a tub.
